How are people who are severly disabled like Stephen Hawking fed?

Are they fed intravenously and if so what actually happens to their stomachs, do they experience hunger etc? Or are they fed through a tube, which is directly placed in the stomach and how is that done. What if they feel ill etc? Sounds morbid but am curious and apologise if I offend anyone.
