Has anyone roadtripped across the U.S before? Can anyone help me plan?

I drove to Southern California last summer. We started in Minneapolis. We drove one day to Omaha. Second day to Denver. Third day to Las Vegas and the last day to California. We took my daughter's car. She was moving out there for a job. I don't think you can rent a car to travel that many states. You could do Amtrak and rent a car once you get there.
