Can anyone give me a rational reason why we are building a missile defense system near Russia?

Remember the Cuban Missile Crisis during the Kennedy-Krushev years, for the same reasons Kennedy confronted Russia's intitiatives, it appears Putin is placed in a similar predicament. At least from the standpoint of logistics. What are we doing?
