American psycho, movie with christian bale?

it came out in 200, i watched it this weekend and i know he didn't kill those people but i was really confused by the last scene with the lawyer being confused when he's like "no my name is patrick bateman" and the lawyers just like i don't find this funny anymore, and he says some weird thing in the narrative that just doesn't make sense. I don't understand
